Serene Insurance Ghana Limited, a leading and the fastest growing insurance company in Ghana, has renewed its commitment with the annual Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon, fixed for August 3, 2024.

The third edition of the Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon would witness the finest athletes across Ghana and Africa as they compete for more than GHC 50,000 in cash prizes.

Serene Insurance would provide insurance coverage for all participants in the race, running vest for over 500 athletes, and an undisclosed cash package.

Mr. Henri Senyo Penni, General Manager of Medivents Consult, organisers of the event expressed their appreciation to the company for their support, adding that it would motivate athletes to put up their best performance.

He thanked Serene Insurance Company for their continuous support for the marathon, which is part of celebrations to mark this year’s Homowo festival.

Mr. Senyo Penni noted that this year’s race would see a massive improvement in terms of the safety and security of athletes.

r. Penni disclosed the formal launch of this year’s Marathon would be held in May to herald the commencement of activities leading to the climax.

Nana Yaw Owusu Dwomoh – General Manager in charge of Business Development and Marketing said his outfit was committed to the annual race hence the need to renew the relationship.

He noted that they were looking forward to a great event this year, as the annual marathon features in their annual activities.

The 2024 Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon would begin at the Accra Sports Stadium through some principal streets and end at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in its quest to strengthen the developmental structures for youth football has appointed five coaches to lead the various national teams.

They are Godwin Attram, Maxwell Konadu, Yaw Preko, Abdul Karim Zito and Nurudeen Amadu.

Four of these coaches have been assigned to the newly created male national teams, U-15, U-18, U-19 and U-21, which seeks to nurture young talents from grassroots level to the national stage.

The national U-15 team would be handed by former Medeama SC Head Coach, Yaw Preko who has paid his dues in local and international football.

He comes with some level of coaching experience having handled the Black Satellites and the national U-17 team.

Coach Yaw Preko aside his national team exposure has also worked with the likes of Great Olympics, Accra Hearts of Oak and Nigerian side Ifeanyi Ubah.

FC Samartex boss, Coach Nurudeen Amadu has also been appointed Head Coach of the national U-18 team.

His addition to the list of coaches did not come as surpr
ise to many who have enjoyed his superb coaching style in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) over the years.

The 53 year-old, who is currently leading the race to win the GPL title has also worked with the national U-17 team, Aduana Football Club and King Faisal Babies FC.

Dreams FC Head Coach, Abdul Karim Zito has been assigned to the national U-19 team with hopes of building a formidable squad for Ghana.

With several years of experience in his career, the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner once served as Head Coach for Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, King Faisal and Kwaebibirem FC.

To his credit, Karim Zito won the U-20 WAFU Championship in 2020 before clinching the AFCON title a year after.

The experienced gaffer is on the verge of making history with Dreams FC in the CAF Confederations Cup as they journey in search of a place in the finals.

Godwin Attram, former Black Stars striker has been also been given the nod to lead the national U-21 team whereas Nsoatreman FC coach, Maxwell Konadu would head
the national U-23 team, the Black Meteors.

Ms. Millicent Ankude, a table tennis player of Vilcabamba Club, has appealed to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), philanthropists, and the government to explore opportunities in the sports sector.

Ms Ankude told the GNA Sport in an interview that focusing on table tennis could stimulate economic growth through job creation, tourism, and the development of the entire sport industry.

She explained that investing in table tennis had numerous positive effects on individuals, communities, and society, but sadly the game was considered one of the lesser-known sports in Ghana, leading to low attention on it despite its potential to lift the flag of Ghana high on the world map.

‘We need funds, we need proper investments, and long-term investment if stakeholders and people of interest can actually see the game and create training avenues for us that would be beneficial,’ she stated.

The table tennis player said the sector could boost the interest of the players to give out their best as well as attract others
to learn the game, which would further increase the medals the country obtains from competitions at different levels.

She suggested that there must be training centres at the community level with the necessary tools, such as tables and rackets, to make training easier and more interesting.

She said the sport could bring people together to foster a sense of community, creating opportunities for teamwork and leadership development, especially among young people.

Ms Akunde appealed to schools to focus on table tennis, stressing that participation in sports can teach important life skills such as discipline, teamwork, goal setting, and resilience, which could further contribute to their academic success.

She expressed worry that it was extremely difficult for minor sports to get media attention in Ghana and journalists to increase awareness on the game to help Ghanaians appreciate the importance of playing table tennis.

The Limbe based elite one outfit, Victoria United arrived the premises of the governor’s office with a crowd of supporters.

The team which two 2 years ago were promoted into the elite one was described as the pride of the sea side city of Limbe and the rest of the South West by various speakers who took turns to speak.

The president of Victoria United, Nkwain Valentine who took over the club in 2019 had promised that the team will play the CAF championship.

With a dream come through, he lauded the support of the South West Governor and other stakeholders who believed and stood by the team.

The Victoria United president said it wasn’t an easy journey to the top. However, they are determined not only to win but to use football and disarm separatist fighters in the bushes.

‘I’m very sure we are going to go far in the African Championship. I’m sure we can bring the cup to South West,’ he affirmed.

Ndazeh Valerie Nchiakeh, president of the South West bearuea of the Federation of Cameroon Football (FECAFOOT)
said a lot had changed for South West football in just few years. He explained that prior to the emergence of their leadership, the region was barely heard in football despite the infrastructure it boost off.

Mr. Ndazeh then informed the governor that the victory is clear indication that the sporting endowment in the region are being effectively used and the trophy is going to inspire most youths in the region.

With joy, the South West Governor received the trophy which stands as first of it’s kind in the administrative unit.

He noted that the win was a show that hardwork pays off and ‘the South West region is standing tall. The South West region is doing well.’

Highlighting the significance of the win, the senior administrator said it was testament of the living together in the South West. ‘We are the South West region, the historical laboratory of living together,’ he remarked.

Through the elected representatives present, the South West boss called on the population of the region to mobilize and provid
e the necessary support to the team.

He concluded by calling on the team to remian vigilant and ensure healthy collaboration at all levels. Upgrade their performances and remain discipline to attain more victories.

The South West Governor handed a cash envelope to the team. Senator Mbella Moki, in same manner gifted the team 1 million francs. Victoria United will be competing in the CAF championship.

The President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, has participated in a gala match in Lyon France, aimed at raising funds to improve the daily lives of children and teenagers in hospital.

The game played at the Bernard Giroux stadium, featured two teams; Variétés Club de France in which French President, Emmanuel Macron played alongside media personalities and former football players, and the team of caregivers whom Eto’o played with.

The initiative led by the Pieces Jaunes foundation, was watched by several high-profile personalities including the French first lady Brigitte Macron, who is the president of the charity organization.

Other world personalities present included the coach of the France national team, Didier Deschamps, world renowned coach Arsene Wenger, Didier Drogba, and Eden Hazard among others.

The 2024 event marked 35 years since the initiative was founded.

Faris Moumbagna’s acrobatic finish in Marseille’s 2-2 draw against Toulouse on Sunday, has been the major highlight in French football in the past days.

The Cameroonian forward, who had a gloomy start with Olympique of Marseille when he arrived from Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt in January, is now unleashing the fierceness in him.

‘It is true that when I arrived, I was heavily criticized and I still face it till today. I know what I have to do and I’m at the disposal of the coach anytime he needs me’ Moumbagna said.

His equalizer on Sunday, came after his goal against Benfica in the Europa League on Thursday, which helped his team qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

Coach Jean Louis Gasset said the Cameroonian’s success will help boost his confidence. ‘It is good for his progress. He has much potential. But he still has to work on the technical part’ the OM coach said.

The national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers will be in New Zealand in June this year to participant in the International Professional and Amateur Boxing tournament in Auckland with their New Zealand counterparts.

According to Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) Mr. Dauda Fuseni, the programme was to enable boxers of the two countries to test and sharpen their skills ahead of major international boxing events.

He said while the main team would be in Thailand to participate in the second World Boxing Qualifier for Paris 2024, the reserve side comprising other top young budding pugilists like Mohammed Aryeetey and Abu Kamoko would get the opportunity to travel to New Zealand for the project which is a bilateral relationship agreed by the Amateur Federations of the two countries.

Mr. Fuseni said the Black Bombers remarkable performance at the 13th?African Games where they bagged four gold, one silver and two bronze medals had been noticed and Ghana was still seen as a great boxing natio

‘We need the exposure, our boys are good, but they lack international exposure and experience, they must go out to fight or we must invite other nationals here and it is not easy, so when such opportunities come we should not let it slip’ he said in a media interview.

Mr. Fuseni said the Black Bombers must be in Paris at all cost adding ‘We should be at the 2024 Olympic Games, we have made the history and we should maintain it’.

Supporters of Kumasi Asante Kotoko were able to afford a smile for the first time in eight matches after beating Samartex 1996 by a goal to nil at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday in a match week 27 encounter of the Ghana Premier League.

The last time the Porcupines tasted victory was on March 1 when they defeated Bibiani Gold Stars at the same venue.

Since that match, they had managed to pick only a point from a possible 21, leaving their fans in excruciating pains as they watched their darling club sink down the table week after week.

Even more disheartening was the fact that they lost three consecutive matches at their favourite Baba Yara Stadium right in front of their fans.

Perhaps taking inspiration from their Life Patron who called for an emergency meeting days before the match, the ‘fabulous boys’ demonstrated commitment to overturn the poor results throughout the match.

They made their attacking intent known right from the blast of the whistle as they stormed the half of their guests in search of
an early goal.

As they surged forward in their quest to end their winless run in the second round of the league, Enoch Morrison hit the woodwork with only four minutes into the game.

The visitors responded almost immediately at the other end of the pitch when Evans Osei Owusu forced a brilliant save from Frederick Asare.

Determined to bounce back after three consecutive losses at home, the Porcupines continued to push for the first goal, but found tough customers in the visitors who would not be pushovers.

The league leaders who were also seeking to consolidate their position at the summit of the table had to step up to foil all the attacking threats of Kotoko.

This resulted in an end-to-end action as both teams ran at each other in their attempt to break the deadlock.

They however went into the break with the virginity of the match intact.

Kotoko started the second half just as they did in the first half, making early incursions into the vital area of Samartex.

As they probed for the opener, referee
George Vormawor awarded them a penalty for an infringement on Peter Amidu Acquah in the box.

Morrison made no mistake from the spot as he sent goalkeeper Kofi Baah the wrong direction for the opener.

As expected, Samartex threw more men upfront after conceding but Kotoko stood firm to defend their lines with Asare making some spectacular saves to preserve their lead.

Both coaches introduced fresh limbs as the match entered the 70th minute with so much to play for in the last 20 minutes.

But Porcupine Warriors held on to win for the first time in eight matches, bringing their winless run in the second round to an end at the expense of the league leaders.

A five-member para-athletic team has left Ghana for the 2024 Marrakech World Para Athletics (WPA) Grand Prix competition in Morocco.

The tournament fixed April 22-28 would serve as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

The competition would also give an opportunity for the classification of the first Ghanaian Para Athletes in shot put, standing javelin among others.

Other members of the team who have been classified already include 21-year-old Amos Ahiagah, a right arm amputee and he would be competing in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and men’s long jump events.

Whiles 19-year-old Diana Kuubetegr also an arm amputee would be competing in the women’s 800 meters, 1,500 meters events.

Zinabu Issah an experienced para-athlete would also be competing in women’s sitting shot put, discuss throw and javelin events.

They called on corporate bodies to support the NPC National Paralympic Committee of Ghana to enable them to attend other Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualification events coming up
in Japan, Switzerland and France respectively.

With the support of NPC Ghana, Ghana’s Dr Abena Tannor has qualified as a WPA international classifier and would be one of the doctors to embark on the classification for para-athletes at the event.

The team was sponsored by the President of the NPC of Ghana, Mr. Samson Deen with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority.
