Surforma Globally Launches Ballistic Plate

To Protect Lives in Urban Environments with Civil Risks

Ballistic Plate

Surforma CompactShield

PORTO, Portugal, July 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Surforma has launched on the world market CompactShield, a ballistic plate for use in urban environments with civil risks, aimed at more demanding markets for the protection of people, especially in countries in regional blocks such as America, Africa, and the Middle East.

The Efanor group company – which owns the Sonae group – affirms that the new solution is the result of 3 years of research and development in partnership with Beyondcomposite, gaining a great advantage over existing ones, essentially in its applicability as a decorative solution, thereby not needing two components: ballistic protection and surface design, in addition to weight, durability, price.

With level IIIA, III, and IV protection, according to the NIJ standard 0108:01, the new ballistic CompactShield is mainly intended for the sectors of construction (public buildings, police stations, banks, etc.) and transport (armoured vehicles, bus driver barriers, shipping containers, etc.).

“It is a technological revolution where, in addition to protecting human lives, we incorporate the decorative factor in a single solution, allowing its application to have different uses, namely in the transport and construction sectors,” says Miguel Nogueira, Surforma CEO.

The company has, this way, started a process of globally repositioning its Laminates and Compacts business, both structurally, with the introduction of new raw materials, and technically, by investing in new ranges with improved performance.

“With our new innovation strategy and product pipeline, sales can grow by 10% in the next 5 years, essentially through exports, and resulting in a forecasted increase of €7M in business by 2025,” he states.

ABOUT SURFORMA

Set up in 1959, the company is the origin of the Sonae Group, a Portuguese multinational that is present in 62 countries and which manages a diversified portfolio of businesses in the areas of industry, retail, financial services, technology, shopping centres, and telecommunications. In 2021, the group’s turnover exceeded €8 billion.

With over 60 years of innovation and leadership in the sector, and with the aim of creating its own identity and holding a prominent position in the production and distribution of Laminates and Compacts, SURFORMA® was set up in 2018: a global brand focused essentially on the Furniture, Construction, and Decoration industries. The company operates in over 30 countries, in 5 continents.

Surforma Lance sa Plaque Balistique à L’échelle Mondiale

Protéger Les Vies Dans Les Environnements Urbains Présentant Des Risques Civils

CompactShiled

Surforma CompactShield

PORTO, Portugal, 20 juill.

Hitachi Energy and H2 Green Steel partner to leverage electrification, digitalization, and hydrogen for green steel production

Memorandum of Understanding outlines collaboration to support the decarbonization of the steel industry by using disruptive technology and reduce carbon emissions

Zurich, Switzerland, July 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy today announces that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with H2 Green Steel to leverage electrification, digitalization, and hydrogen to support the decarbonization of the steel industry.

H2 Green Steel, a Swedish industrial start-up, is on a mission to accelerate the global steel industry’s greatest technological shift by eliminating almost all of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the steel production process. It is planning to build its first fossil-free steel plant in Boden, Sweden, alongside a giga scale electrolyzer plant for the production of green hydrogen.

The MoU outlines a collaboration which is built on three (3) pillars: 1) Hitachi Energy’s equity investment in H2 Green Steel; 2) products and services from Hitachi Energy that are needed to construct and improve the electrical infrastructure to power steel production and giga scale electrolyzer plants; 3) green steel to be used in the manufacturing of Hitachi Energy’s products, once H2 Green Steel starts production.

Over the past decade, expanding steel production has increased total energy demand and CO2 emissions1, which contributes to about eight percent of the world’s global industrial carbon emissions2.

Starting with the plant in Boden, H2 Green Steel will leverage Hitachi Energy’s capabilities to optimize customers’ value chain to plan, build, operate, and maintain the power infrastructure that includes IT and operational technology (OT). The steel production in Boden will use green hydrogen instead of coal in a fully integrated process using end-to-end digitalization, which reduces up to 95 percent CO2 emissions compared to traditional steelmaking. This will be equivalent to removing 3 million passenger cars per year from road3.

“Achieving carbon-neutrality globally requires efforts from all industries to speed up the energy transition through collaborations,” says Johan Söderström, Head of Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Hitachi Energy. “This collaboration with H2 Green Steel is a pioneering example of how we are working together and creating additional benefits for our customers. We are supporting H2 Green Steel’s electrification project and at the same time, we are able to secure green steel for our products, which is in line with our Purpose: Advancing a sustainable energy future for all,” he added.

“The partnership we have entered into with Hitachi Energy is further reinforced by an equity investment in H2 Green Steel. The partners we choose to work with need to share our values, to make a real commitment to live up to the Paris Agreement, and to work tightly together to leverage each other’s strengths. With Hitachi Energy we have that, as well as their long history, broad experience, and innovative offerings,” says Henrik Henriksson, CEO of H2 Green Steel.

Rare twin giraffes born in Kenya

NAIROBI— Rare twins have been born to a Maasai giraffe in Nairobi’s national park, the Kenyan wildlife minister said Tuesday.

“This is an extremely rare occurrence,” Najib Balala said on Twitter in a post accompanied by a picture of the mother watching over her offspring.

The world’s tallest species was listed as “vulnerable to extinction” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s 2016 Red List of threatened wildlife.

Only about 117,000 giraffe remain in the wild, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. It said the numbers of the gentle long-necked giant in Africa have plummeted by 30 percent over the last 30 years, describing it as a “silent extinction”.

Kenya is home to three subspecies of giraffe, the Maasai, the reticulated and the Rothschild.

Nairobi National Park lies just seven kilometres from the heart of the Kenyan capital, and is a tourist magnet for its wildlife including lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalos which graze against a backdrop of distant skyscrapers.

At 15 months, giraffes have one of the longest gestation periods for mammals. They give birth standing up, which means their calves drop just under two metres to the ground.

This startling introduction to life gets them up and running around in less than an hour. A newborn calf is bigger than the average adult human.

Only a handful of twin births have been documented worldwide with most often not surviving.

In the wild, giraffes can live up to 25 years, while in captivity they can survive more than 35 years.

Huge wildfire breaks out near Tunisian capital

TUNIS— A huge wildfire broke out Tuesday in Hammam-Lif town in the northeastern Tunisian province of Ben Arous, nearly 20 km away from the capital Tunis, local media reported.

The fire spread quickly and ravaged a large part of the nearby mountain Boukornine, one of the most famous mountains in Tunisia, according to private radio station Mosaique FM.

It took firefighters several hours to control the fire and stop its spread, said the report.

Local authorities called in the national army, and military helicopters were also deployed. Around ten civil defense vehicles were on the ground, supported by several forest guard vehicles.

There was no official word on the cause of the fire, and the firefighters are still working to extinguish it.
