Dominica uplifting education sector, three new primary schools commissioned

Roseau, May 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The government of Dominica commissioned three primary schools over the weekend. The Morne Jaune Primary School, Stevens Primary School, and Wills Strathmore Stevens Primary were reopened and now possess modern education technology, climate-resilient infrastructure, and an advanced learning environment.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation of these schools are done as part of the government’s Climate Resilience and Restoration Project. The schools now have classroom blocks equipped with modern learning techniques, including an auditorium, computer lab, library, kitchen, cafeteria, guidance & counselling room, and washroom facilities.

The government of Dominica is paying keen attention to developing a climate-resilient infrastructure as it works towards becoming the “world’s first climate-resilient nation”. The government vowed to create resilient school infrastructure following Hurricane Maria in 2017. The natural disaster destroyed around 90 percent of the country’s infrastructure, devastating livelihoods.

The projects have been completed with assistance from the government of Canada through the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) as part of the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project.

Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the government continues to invest in the education sector as students are the country’s future.

Octavia Alfred- Dominica’s Minister of Education, Human Resource, Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence, stated that these newly structured schools represent new opportunities for students. She referred to the government’s efforts to transform the education sector as a “new philosophy of schooling”.

Besides this, the prestigious Dominica Grammar School is also undergoing a facelift, and the renovation is expected to be complete by 2024. Established in 1893, one of the oldest educational establishments on the island.

Dominica’s government continues to prioritise education, which has attracted foreign investors wanting to invest in their own and their children’s futures.

Horn of Africa drought affects 18 mln people: UN

UNITED NATIONS— The northeast Africa drought affects more than 18 million people across Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, including at least 16.7 million severely food insecure, a UN Spokesman said.

“These numbers are expected to rise in the weeks ahead, with the Horn of Africa facing the longest drought in at least four decades,” said Stephane Dujarric, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, saw the devastating impact of the fourth consecutive failed rainy season in the area during his visit to Kenya, Dujarric said. Griffiths met with people in the village of Turkana County in Kenya, who told him how this is the worst drought they have endured.

The spokesman said that during Griffiths’ visit, he spoke virtually with displaced people in Doolow in Somalia and the Somali Region of Ethiopia, who said the drought is threatening their lives, the spokesman said.

The emergency relief coordinator also met Kenyan officials on the government’s response to the drought and the need for urgent action and support for drought-affected communities to adapt and thrive in the future, Dujarric said. Griffiths warned that if new funding to scale-up aid operations is not received immediately, time will run out, and the region will face significant loss of life.

Tunisian interior minister’s wife injured in explosion at home

TUNIS,— An explosion rocked the house of Tunisian Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine on Monday, causing slight burns to the minister’s wife, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak, and some local media said Charfeddine was at home during the explosion.

“The explosion occurred on Monday morning at around 7:00 a.m. local time,” it said.

The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company announced that the explosion that occurred in the home of the Minister of Interior, Tawfiq Sharafeddine, was caused by a recent partial gas leak, which caused material damage to part of the house and minor injury to the wife of the Minister of the Interior.

Later, the Ministry of the Interior issued a statement confirming that, “According to preliminary investigations conducted by the technical and scientific police, it was proven that there was a partial gas leak in the office of the Minister of Interior in Tunis, and the most likely cause of the explosion occurred on Monday, May 16, 2022, around seven o’clock. In the morning, which resulted in separate burns to a member of his family and some material damage.”

On March 26, Tunisian security forces revealed that they had foiled a planned stabbing attack on Charfeddine and dismantled the concerned terrorist cell.

The terrorists had planned to attack Charfeddine during his visit to the southeastern Tunisia in early January of this year.

Coup attempt “supported by a Western state” foiled in Mali: gov’t spokesperson

BAMAKO— A coup attempted by “a small group of anti-progressive Malian officers and non-commissioned officers” on the night of May 11 to 12 in Mali was foiled, Mali’s government spokesperson Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga said in a statement.

“The militia were supported by a Western state,” said the statement.

“The attempt was foiled thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of the defense and security forces of Mali,” said the Malian government, condemning with “the utmost rigor” the attempted coup while saying that all appropriate measures are being deployed.

“Those arrested will be in the hands of justice,” said the statement, without mentioning the identity of the officers and non-commissioned officers involved.

After the coup on Aug 18, 2020, an 18-month political transition was launched in Mali on Sept 15, 2020, which expired on Feb 27 this year. Since then, the transitional authorities have been negotiating an extension of this deadline with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

On April 21, the Malian transitional government announced the start of a 24-month transition process for the organization of free and transparent presidential elections.

UN voices concern over clashes in Libya’s Tripoli

TRIPOLI— The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed concern about clashes that took place west of Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday between armed groups.

“The UNSMIL expresses its serious concern about armed clashes on May 15 that involved indiscriminate fire and the alleged use of heavy weapons in Janzour area, a densely populated neighbourhood in Tripoli,” said the Mission in a statement.

“The current mobilization of forces affiliated with different armed groups increases tensions and risk of clashes that could spiral into armed conflict,” added the statement.

The Mission called on all parties in Libya to exercise maximum restraint and to use dialogue to resolve contentious issues, fulfilling their obligations to protect civilians and infrastructure.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and unrest ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.

Spain, Morocco reopen land borders after two-year closure

FNIDEQ (Morocco),— Morocco and Spain have reopened the land borders between the north African country and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, two years after they were shut due to Covid restrictions and a major diplomatic row.

The enclaves on the Mediterranean coast in northern Morocco have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa.

The gates opened shortly after 11:00 pm local time on Monday night, letting dozens of cars and queues of pedestrians pass in both directions.

At the Fnideq border post, smiles lit up the faces of the travellers crossing to see their families on the Moroccan side.

“I was stuck for two years in Ceuta, I’m very happy to be back home,” said Nourredine.

“I am happy that Morocco and Spain have restored their relations, it allows us to see our families,” said one man in his sixties.

The reopening of the borders of the two enclaves initially remains limited to residents of Europe’s open-borders Schengen area and their family members.

It will be expanded to cross-border workers after May 31.

The local economies on both sides of the borders depend on the crossing of people and goods.

The Ceuta and Melilla crossings were closed during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

The borders became the focus of a major dispute last year, when Madrid allowed the leader of a Western Saharan independence movement to be treated for Covid-19 in a Spanish hospital.

Ten thousand migrants surged across the Moroccan border into Ceuta as local border forces looked the other way, a move widely seen as a punitive gesture by Rabat.

In March this year, Spain moved to end the diplomatic crisis with Morocco by changing its decades-long stance of neutrality and backing the kingdom’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara, which Rabat insists must remain under

its sovereignty.

Maritime travel between the two countries resumed on April 12.

Following their reconciliation, Morocco and Spain have committed to strengthening cooperation on irregular migration.

Morocco, which is one of Spain’s major trade partners, plays a significant role in controlling flows of migrants towards Europe.
